How to share a VPN from your phone or computer

If you turn on a VPN on your phone and share the internet through a hotspot, connected devices almost always get internet without the VPN. On both iPhone and most Android phones, a VPN app only tunnels the phone's own traffic, while tethered traffic goes around it. There are four ways to actually share the VPN: through a Windows computer, through a proxy on Android, through a router, or by installing the VPN on each device. The last is the simplest if the service has no device limit.

It's a common question: "how to share a vpn" and "how to give someone a vpn" with their variants get about 50,000 impressions a month in Russian search (Yandex Wordstat, August–September 2026).

Why a hotspot shares internet without the VPN

A VPN app on your phone creates a virtual network interface and sends the phone's app traffic into it. The hotspot works at a different level: the system routes packets from connected devices straight to the mobile network, and they never reach the VPN interface.

PlatformHotspot with VPN onWhat other devices get
iPhoneWorksInternet without VPN
Android (most firmware)WorksInternet without VPN
Rooted AndroidConfigured manuallyCan be routed through the VPN
Windows 10/11"Mobile hotspot" + sharing the VPN adapterInternet through the VPN

Easy to check: connect a laptop to your phone's hotspot and open any IP lookup service. If you see a Russian mobile carrier address, the VPN isn't being shared.

Method 1. Share a VPN from Android through a proxy

On Android without root there's a workaround: the phone runs a proxy server on the local network, and other devices go online through that proxy.

  1. Turn on the VPN on your phone.
  2. Install a proxy app (for example, Every Proxy) and start an HTTP or SOCKS proxy in it. The app shows an IP address and port.
  3. Turn on the hotspot, or connect the phone and the other device to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. On the second device, enter that IP and port in the proxy settings: on Windows it's "Settings → Network & internet → Proxy", on macOS in network settings, on another phone in the Wi-Fi network properties.

The limitation: only programs that respect the system proxy will use it. Browsers almost always do; games and some messengers don't.

The BessyConnect Android app has its own mode for sharing the tunnel with other devices, so you won't need a third-party proxy app with it.

Method 2. Share a VPN from a Windows computer

Windows can share a VPN connection with other devices using built-in tools.

  1. Turn on the VPN on the computer.
  2. Open "Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot" and turn it on.
  3. Open "Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings".
  4. Find the VPN adapter, open "Properties → Sharing" and allow other network users to use this connection, selecting the hotspot adapter from the list.
  5. Connect your phone or set-top box to the hotspot and check the IP.

If sharing disappears after the VPN restarts, repeat step 4: Windows sometimes resets sharing on reconnect. Installing a VPN on a computer is covered in VPN on PC.

Method 3. A router: share the VPN with the whole home

The most reliable option for everyday use. You set up the VPN once on the router, and every device on the network goes through it: TV, set-top box, smart speaker, guests' phones. Nothing needs to be installed on them.

The downside is that not every router can do this, and setup is harder. Guides for specific models:

If you'd rather not put the VPN on the router but need Russian sites to open directly, split tunneling will help.

Method 4. Install the VPN on each device

If the service doesn't limit devices, you don't need to share anything: just install the app on the second phone, tablet or TV and sign in to the same account. This is more reliable than any sharing: each device keeps its own tunnel and doesn't depend on whether your phone is nearby.

For TVs and set-top boxes without an app, a router or sharing from a computer remain. There's a separate guide for Smart TVs: VPN on Samsung and LG Smart TV.

How to share a VPN subscription

It all depends on the service's rules. Many VPNs tie the subscription to an account, limit it to 3–10 devices and forbid sharing access with others in their terms.

If you use clients like Happ or v2rayTun with a vless:// key, "sharing" usually means sending the key or a subscription link. That works, but remember: the key is access to your plan, and everyone who has it shares your speed and limits. What's inside such a key, we covered in VPN key.

Sharing with BessyConnect

BessyConnect has no device limit, and one subscription can be used by the whole family: install the app on each device. On Android there's also a mode for sharing the tunnel with other devices. The protocol is VLESS with Reality camouflage, there are more than a hundred servers, no logs, and registration isn't required.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share a VPN from an iPhone through a hotspot? No. On iPhone the VPN only works for the phone itself, and devices connected to the hotspot get internet directly. You can share a VPN from a Windows computer or through a router.

Why doesn't the VPN work on my laptop when I share internet from my phone? A VPN app only tunnels its own device's traffic, and hotspot traffic bypasses the tunnel. You need a proxy on the phone, a VPN on the laptop itself, or a router with a VPN.

How do I share a VPN from an Android phone? Without root, through a proxy app: it runs an HTTP or SOCKS proxy that you enter on the other device. With root, you can route all hotspot traffic into the VPN.

How do I share a VPN with a friend? The easiest way is to install the VPN on their device, if the service allows several devices per subscription. In clients with vless:// keys you can pass on the key, but then you share your plan with your friend.

Can I share a VPN through a router? Yes, it's the most reliable way: the VPN is set up on the router once and works for every device on the network, including TVs and set-top boxes.
