VPN from GitHub: which clients are there and how not to download a stealer

GitHub hosts the source code and ready-made builds of popular VPN clients: v2rayN, v2rayNG, Hiddify, NekoBox, sing-box, Amnezia and others. Downloading from there is fine, and often even necessary when an app has been removed from the store. But GitHub has a flip side: attackers create copies of popular repositories and upload builds with stealers inside. In July 2026, Solar 4RAYS specialists described such fakes of block-bypassing utilities with the Salat and Santa stealers inside. You can tell the original from a copy in a minute if you know where to look.

The queries "vpn github" in both spellings and "download vpn github" together get about 29,000 impressions a month in Russian search (Yandex Wordstat, August–September 2026).

What VPNs are on GitHub

It's important to understand: almost everything you'll find on GitHub is clients, not VPN services. A client knows how to connect, but has no servers. It needs a link or subscription from a service, or your own server.

ClientPlatformsWhat it does
v2rayNWindowsImports vless://, vmess:// links and subscriptions
v2rayNGAndroidThe same on Android
HiddifyAndroid, iOS, Windows, macOS, LinuxUniversal client with a simple interface
NekoBoxAndroid, Windows, LinuxClient on the sing-box core
sing-boxAll majorThe project's core and official clients
AmneziaAll majorClient plus a wizard for setting up your own server

A detailed comparison of popular clients is in v2rayTun, Hiddify or Streisand, and Amnezia has its own article: Amnezia VPN: what it is and how to set it up.

How to download a VPN client from GitHub properly

  1. Find the official repository via the project's website, not via GitHub search. For Amnezia it's amnezia.org → link to amnezia-vpn/amnezia-client; for Hiddify, the link from its official site.
  2. Open the Releases section on the right side of the repository page.
  3. Choose the latest stable release, not a pre-release.
  4. In the Assets block, download the file for your platform: .apk for Android, .exe or .msi for Windows, .dmg for macOS.
  5. If the release publishes checksums (SHA-256), compare them with the hash of the downloaded file.

A file from the Releases section of the official repository is exactly what the developers published. Anything else (links in the README of someone's fork, archives on file hosts, "fixed builds") is a reason to be wary.

How to spot a fake repository

According to Solar 4RAYS, fake repositories share the same signs:

  • The account was created recently, a few weeks ago, with a single commit uploading files.
  • No stars or forks, while the original has thousands.
  • The Issues tab is disabled, so users can't complain.
  • The instructions ask you to disable your antivirus or add the program folder to exclusions. This is the clearest red flag.
  • One account holds several similar repositories with different names to catch more search queries.
  • The build isn't in Releases but in an archive inside the repository or behind an external link.

Such fakes usually don't last long and get deleted, but they catch victims in the meantime. A stealer takes saved passwords, browser cookies and messenger sessions. Why that's dangerous even with two-factor protection is explained in infostealers and stolen sessions.

If you've already downloaded a suspicious build

  1. Disconnect the device from the network and remove the program.
  2. Scan the system with an up-to-date antivirus.
  3. From another, clean device, change passwords for email, banks and messengers and end all active sessions.
  4. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it's missing.

VPN from GitHub and traffic security

Even a genuine client from GitHub is only half the story. The other half is the server you connect to. Free subscriptions and keys from GitHub repositories with "lists of working configs" are run by unknown people: the server owner sees which addresses you connect to and can keep logs. Such keys also get blocked quickly, because thousands of people use them at once.

If you want full control over both the client and the server, your own VPS remains: your own VPN on a VPS.

When a ready-made service is simpler

BessyConnect is a ready-made service with its own app from the official stores, with no manual key imports or hunting for subscriptions. The protocol is VLESS with Reality camouflage, there are more than a hundred servers, addresses are updated on the service side, no logs are kept, registration isn't required and there's no device limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to download a VPN from GitHub? Yes, if it's the Releases section of the official repository found via the project's website. Copies are dangerous: new accounts without stars, with Issues disabled and instructions to disable your antivirus.

Which VPN client should I download from GitHub? On Windows people usually take v2rayN or Hiddify, on Android v2rayNG, Hiddify or NekoBox. For your own server, Amnezia. A client still needs a link, a subscription or your own server.

Is there a free VPN on GitHub? GitHub has free clients and repositories with lists of free configurations. But those servers are run by unknown people, they get blocked quickly, and the owner sees your connections.

How can I tell a repository is fake? Look at the account age, the number of stars and forks, whether Issues are enabled and where the build is. A request to disable your antivirus or add the program to exclusions is an almost certain sign of a fake.

What should I do if I installed a client from a fake repository? Remove the program, scan the system with an antivirus and, from another device, change your passwords, ending all active sessions in email, banks and messengers.
