NordVPN (Норд ВПН) in Russia: does it work, how to download it and how to pay

Officially, NordVPN doesn't work in Russia. The company removed its Russian servers in 2019. Roskomnadzor announced that the service was blocked on September 3, 2021. In January 2026, a NordVPN representative told TechRadar that the service doesn't operate in the region and doesn't plan to return "under the current circumstances". The app can still be installed through a foreign store account. Sometimes it even connects through obfuscated servers, but there are no guarantees, and paying for a subscription directly from Russia is difficult.

If you need a VPN that disguises traffic as an ordinary HTTPS connection and doesn't require registration, we recommend BessyConnect. Details and an honest comparison below.

Does NordVPN work in Russia in 2026?

As a product for Russia, NordVPN doesn't work: there are no servers in the country, the site and the service are blocked, it isn't in the Russian app stores, and the company says plainly that it doesn't operate in the region. Technically you can sometimes connect, but that depends on the carrier and the day.

How it came to this:

June 2, 2022According to GlobalCheck, nordvpn.com was unavailable on the networks of MTS, Rostelecom, MegaFon, Tele2, Beeline and YotaForkLog

In the same TechRadar piece, Amnezia VPN founder Mazay Banzaev called NordVPN, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN "effectively non-functional" in Russia. According to him, only protocols that disguise themselves as other network protocols work. Why VPNs stop connecting is covered in detail in our article why a VPN isn't working.

What is NordVPN and who is behind it?

NordVPN is a paid VPN from Nordvpn S.A., which operates under Panamanian jurisdiction. The parent company, Nord Security, is based in the Netherlands. It is one of the largest VPNs in the world: more than 100 million installs on Google Play and about 711 thousand ratings in the US App Store.

ParameterData as of October 26, 2026
PublisherNordvpn S.A. (Panama), Nord Security group (Netherlands)
App Store (US)version 9.16.0 of October 19, 2026, rating 4.66
Google Play100M+ installs, 4.6 from 1.37 million reviews
Servers7,239 servers in 150 countries according to NordVPN's public API
Servers in Russia and Belarusnone
ProtocolsNordLynx (based on WireGuard), NordWhisper, OpenVPN
Devices per subscriptionup to 10 simultaneously
Russian language in the appsnone on any platform

The last point surprises many people. NordVPN's help center (updated October 21, 2026) lists the interface languages for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and Russian isn't among them. In the App Store the app has 13 languages, also without Russian.

There is no official app on RuStore. A search for "nordvpn" on October 26, 2026, returns 54 apps, and the first page has none from Nord Security, only network utilities and namesakes such as the Nord.Rest food delivery service. Yandex suggestions, however, show that people often search for «nordvpn бесплатно логин и пароль» (nordvpn free login and password) and «nordvpn ключи» (nordvpn keys). More on this in the payment section.

How much does NordVPN cost and how do you pay from Russia?

NordVPN has no free version: the App Store description says plainly that you can't use the app without a subscription. In the US App Store on October 26, 2026, a month costs $11.99–13.99 and a year $83.99–99.99. Prices on the website differ and change often because of discounts.

What else to know about the subscription:

  • Trial period. 7 days free, but according to NordVPN's help center only in 15 countries (the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France and others). Russia isn't on the list.
  • Refunds. 30 days to get your money back for a first purchase. Purchases through the App Store are refunded by Apple, not NordVPN.
  • Payment methods. The help center (updated October 25, 2026) lists bank cards, PayPal, cryptocurrency, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and payment through the App Store and Google Play. Mir cards and SBP (Russia's Faster Payments System) aren't on the list.

Paying from Russia is difficult for two reasons. On March 5, 2022, Visa announced that cards issued in Russia would stop working outside the country. And NordVPN itself, according to its representative, doesn't operate in the region: TechRadar writes that the company left the Russian market after 2022. NordVPN's help center warns of a third problem too: a payment made through a VPN or from an IP address in a country other than the one where the card was issued may be declined by the anti-fraud system.

That leaves intermediaries and "accounts" from marketplaces. Here the risks fall on the buyer. In its App Store description NordVPN notes that subscriptions from resellers don't renew automatically. About "free logins and passwords" from account generators, NordVPN writes plainly: it calls such sites malicious, and using them violates the terms of service and can lead to the account being blocked. What else makes "free keys" and cracked builds dangerous is covered in our article on fake VPN apps.

Downloading NordVPN for PC, Android and iPhone: where is the official version?

There are official versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. That is the list in NordVPN's help article "How to download NordVPN software?" (updated October 22, 2026). Download only from the NordVPN website and official stores.

With a Russian account, it all comes down to the stores:

  1. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV. NordVPN isn't in the Russian App Store: the app page for Russia returns a 404 error, and Apple's catalog returns zero results. The app is available in the US and Kazakhstan App Stores. NordVPN's help center itself advises creating an Apple ID from another country.
  2. Android. On Google Play the app is from Nord Security. The company says it removed it from the Russian storefronts in 2023. Don't install APKs from third-party catalogs: under a well-known name it is easy to get someone else's build.
  3. Windows and Mac. The installer is only on nordvpn.com. The site itself doesn't always open from Russia: in June 2022 ForkLog, citing GlobalCheck, reported that it was unavailable on all major carriers.

If a browser extension seems simpler, remember: it protects only the browser, while other programs bypass the tunnel. How to choose a client for your computer is covered in our piece on VPNs for PC.

Why doesn't NordVPN work in Russia and what can you try?

The main reason is blocking on the network side: DPI equipment recognizes standard VPN protocols, and the IP addresses of many servers are on blocklists. This can be fixed from the app only partially. NordVPN has a separate guide for such countries (updated October 26, 2026); Russia isn't named in it, but the advice is general.

The steps NordVPN's help center itself suggests:

  1. Switch the protocol to NordWhisper ("Profile → Settings → Protocol"). It disguises VPN traffic as ordinary web traffic.
  2. Connect to the Obfuscated category ("All locations → Obfuscated"). These servers are visible only if the protocol is set to "Auto" or NordWhisper.
  3. Try OpenVPN (TCP); it is more resistant to blocking than UDP.
  4. Reset your device's network settings and restart it.
  5. Set up a manual IKEv2 connection following the guide for your system.
  6. Try another network: if it works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile internet, the carrier is the issue.

According to NordVPN's help center, updated October 19, 2026, the obfuscated servers have been moved from OpenVPN to NordWhisper, so you can no longer connect to them manually via OpenVPN. Also keep in mind what Proton VPN, which is in a similar situation, says: its general manager David Peterson told TechRadar in January 2026 that the Russian authorities block the IP addresses and entire ranges of VPN servers, so even a DPI-resistant protocol may take several attempts. The company doesn't promise that NordVPN will work in Russia, and support won't help here.

Is NordVPN safe?

Based on public data, NordVPN is one of the most audited VPNs: it has had six independent audits of its no-logs policy. They were conducted by Deloitte Audit Lithuania under the ISAE 3000 standard: in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, at the end of 2024 (results published on February 18, 2025) and at the end of 2025.

TechRadar wrote about the latest audit on February 3, 2026: it covered standard servers, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. The full reports are available only to customers in their Nord Account.

What the app declares about data:

  • App Store. Email address and user ID are linked to the user. Usage data and diagnostics are collected without being linked to your identity.
  • Google Play. Data isn't shared with third parties. The app may collect personal and financial info and three other types. There is an independent security review badge.
  • Jurisdiction. Panama, which, according to NordVPN, has no mandatory data retention.

The service's security doesn't answer the main question for Russia: whether it will connect on your network today.

What to replace NordVPN with in Russia?

Look for a replacement among services that disguise traffic as ordinary protocols: according to Banzaev, those are mainly what work in Russia in 2026. To be fair, NordVPN is stronger on network size, platforms and audits. It is weaker where it matters most in Russia: no Russian language, no way to pay and no promise that the service will work.

Why we recommend BessyConnect

We recommend BessyConnect to anyone looking for a NordVPN replacement specifically for Russia. It runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to the carrier, the traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS connection. There are more than a hundred servers, no logs are kept, registration is optional, and there is a trial period.

Where NordVPN is stronger, to put it plainly. It has far more servers and countries, apps for Windows and Linux, browser extensions and six Deloitte audits. BessyConnect has no Windows app.

BessyConnect apps:

What neither BessyConnect, nor NordVPN, nor any other VPN solves. If mobile internet has been restricted to whitelists, a VPN as a rule won't help. BessyConnect can't be installed on a Windows computer yet. And BessyConnect, like NordVPN, isn't in the Russian App Store: on an iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.

If you already have a paid NordVPN and it connects via NordWhisper, keep using it. If you can't pay for a subscription from Russia or the service won't connect, try BessyConnect: all versions are on the download page.

Frequently asked questions

Does NordVPN work in Russia in 2026? Officially, no: its servers were withdrawn in 2019, the service has been blocked by Roskomnadzor since September 2021, and in January 2026 the company confirmed to TechRadar that it doesn't operate in the region. Connecting via NordWhisper and obfuscated servers is sometimes possible but not guaranteed.

Can I use NordVPN for free? No. There is no free plan, and the 7-day trial is available only in 15 countries, and Russia isn't one of them. NordVPN calls sites that generate "free logins and passwords" malicious, and an account obtained that way may be blocked.

How do I pay for NordVPN from Russia? Directly, it is difficult: Mir cards and SBP aren't among the payment methods, Russian Visa cards haven't worked abroad since March 2022, and NordVPN doesn't sell the service in Russia. Subscriptions from resellers, according to the App Store description, don't renew automatically.

Is NordVPN available in Russian? No. According to NordVPN's help center as of October 21, 2026, there is no Russian language in the apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

What can I replace NordVPN with in Russia? We recommend BessyConnect: VLESS with Reality camouflage, more than 100 servers, no logs and no mandatory registration, with a trial period. There are apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android and Android TV; none for Windows yet.
