You know the feeling: the app says "connected," the toggle is green, and yet nothing loads. Videos spin forever, and the site you actually wanted tells you access is restricted. The VPN looks like it's working and clearly isn't at the same time.

Cause: modern filtering systems (DPI, deep packet inspection) can recognize older VPN protocols on sight — OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2. Even when the connection is established, the network sees the tell-tale "fingerprint" of VPN traffic and simply throttles or blocks it. You're connected, but your data never gets through.
Fix: use a protocol that filtering can't tell apart from ordinary web browsing. Fix: switch to a different country or a different server in the app to get a clean IP the service hasn't flagged yet. If one server doesn't work, try a second or third: with a hundred servers on tap, a working option turns up quickly.
Symptom: an unstable connection, drops, the VPN working sometimes and not others with no clear pattern.
Cause: sometimes the problem isn't the VPN at all, but the network itself or the state of your device.
A quick checklist:
