Windscribe (Виндскрайб) VPN: does it work in Russia, how to download it and how to pay

Windscribe is a Canadian VPN from Windscribe Limited with a free plan: 10 GB a month after confirming your email and 2 GB without it, with servers in 10 countries. Pro costs $9 a month or $69 a year. In Russia the service works intermittently: in January 2026, traffic through its anti-censorship tools fell by about 90%, and only between February and April 2026 was the AmneziaWG protocol built into the apps. The app isn't in the Russian App Store or on RuStore, and you can't pay for Pro directly with a Russian card.

If you need a VPN that disguises traffic as ordinary HTTPS and doesn't require registration, we recommend BessyConnect. Below is an honest comparison, including where Windscribe is stronger.

Does Windscribe work in Russia in 2026?

It works, but unreliably, and it depends on the carrier. According to a Windscribe help article of November 28, 2025, the standard IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols "are often blocked" in Russia. You should connect through Circumvent Censorship mode with AmneziaWG, Stealth or WStunnel. The company itself gives no guarantees.

In a poll in Windscribe's Telegram channel conducted in early 2026, 52% of users from Russia answered that the VPN "never works" for them, TechRadar wrote on February 25, 2026. And back in January, Windscribe co-founder Yegor Sak warned in a conversation with TechRadar that AmneziaWG "won't help against whitelists". More on how blocking works in the article why a VPN isn't working.

What is Windscribe and who is behind it?

Windscribe is a VPN from the Canadian company Windscribe Limited, registered in the province of Ontario. The service launched in 2016; its founders are Yegor Sak (CEO), Alex Paguis and Mark Ulicki. The company says it hasn't taken outside investors, and its apps' code is open.

Stealth wraps OpenVPN in a TLS tunnel via Stunnel, and WStunnel wraps it in WebSocket. Both can run on port 443 and look like ordinary web traffic to the network. The browser extension doesn't have Stealth. We found no lookalikes with the same name in the App Store, but in the Russian App Store a search for "windscribe" returns other VPNs.

How much does Windscribe cost and how do you pay from Russia?

There is a free plan, and that is Windscribe's main advantage. Without an email you get 2 GB a month; with a confirmed email, 10 GB. If you unsubscribe from the marketing newsletter, the limit drops back to 2 GB. A post about Windscribe on X earns the account an extra 5 GB a month, once.

Paid options according to the website and help center as of October 26, 2026:

  • Pro for a month — $9, all 69+ countries, unlimited traffic.
  • Pro for a year — $69 ($5.75 a month).
  • Build-A-Plan — $1 per location per month, plus $1 for unlimited traffic; minimum $3.
  • App Store — its own prices: for example, Pro Monthly is $8.99 in the US store.

You can get a refund within 7 days of your first purchase if less than 10 GB has been used on Pro.

Payment methods according to Windscribe's help center: cryptocurrency, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, local methods via Paymentwall, Apple Pay, Google Play and Amazon. Mir and SBP (Russia's Faster Payments System) aren't on the list. Russian cards won't work: on March 5, 2022, Visa announced that cards issued in Russia would stop working abroad. Windscribe itself writes that since December 8, 2022, Mastercard has been declining all payments to it, and the company doesn't know why. The help center also warns about anti-fraud: payments made through a VPN are often declined.

There is an unusual option: an annual Pro plan paid in cash by mail to a PO box in Toronto. Only $69, only in currencies such as USD, EUR and CAD, non-refundable. The other routes are cryptocurrency or payment intermediaries. Articles about intermediaries found in search on vc.ru and dtf.ru promote specific payment services. Those services have nothing to do with Windscribe, and you take on the risks yourself.

Download Windscribe for PC, Android and iPhone: where is the official version?

The official source is the windscribe.com/download website and the app stores. Windscribe isn't in the Russian stores: the app page in the Russian App Store returns a 404 error, and on RuStore a search for "windscribe" on October 26, 2026, returns not a single app from Windscribe Limited.

  1. Windows, macOS, Linux. The installer from the Windscribe website; the main Windows build targets 64-bit Windows 10 and later. This is the most complete client: Stealth, WStunnel, AmneziaWG and VPN sharing via Secure Hotspot.
  2. Android. Google Play, F-Droid, Huawei AppGallery or an APK from Windscribe's server: the company published direct links in its Telegram channel on February 24, 2026.
  3. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV. App Store only: there is no version that installs outside the store, as Windscribe itself wrote. You need an Apple ID from another country: the app is available in the US and Kazakhstan App Stores.
  4. Browser. The Chrome, Firefox and Edge extensions protect only the browser; other programs bypass the tunnel.

Better to skip searches like «windscribe vpn взлом скачать» (windscribe vpn crack download): there is a free plan anyway, and a "cracked" build from someone else's site could turn out to be anything. Why such files are dangerous is covered in our article on fake VPN apps.

Why isn't Windscribe working and what to do?

Most often, blocking on the network side is to blame: DPI recognizes standard protocols, and server IP addresses end up on blocklists. Windscribe says plainly that it can't predict which protocol and port will work for a particular user. You will have to try them yourself.

The order from Windscribe's help center (March 2026) and its Telegram channel:

  1. Update the app: Android 3.98.2061 or later, iOS 3.9.13 or later, desktop 2.21.3 or later.
  2. Open "Menu → Preferences → Connection" and turn on Circumvent Censorship.
  3. Set Connection Mode to Manual and the protocol to WireGuard.
  4. Choose an AmneziaWG profile. Start with "A — No Junk Primary" and work down the list: the profiles are sorted by their chances of success.
  5. Wait 20–30 seconds. If it doesn't connect, change the profile or location.
  6. If WireGuard doesn't get through, try Stealth or WStunnel on port 443.
  7. Try another network: if it works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile internet, the carrier is the issue.

Don't confuse this problem with another one: Windscribe's help article "Unable to connect to the Russian VPN server" (February 9, 2026) is about connecting to Windscribe's Russian servers from abroad, not about the VPN working in Russia. If mobile internet has been cut down to whitelists, no protocol will help.

Is Windscribe safe?

Based on public data, Windscribe collects little: an account can be created without an email, and according to the privacy policy, only traffic volume for 30 days, the time of last activity and, for paid accounts, the payment ID for 30 days are stored. According to the company, browsing history and IP addresses aren't recorded.

What else is known:

  • App Store. The app listing says "Data Not Collected". This is the developer's statement; Apple doesn't verify it.
  • Google Play. Data isn't shared with third parties; the app may collect personal info and device identifiers, and data is encrypted in transit.
  • Open source. The source code of the desktop and iOS apps is on GitHub.
  • Reviews. In its App Store description, Windscribe refers to a PacketLabs audit of its server side in June 2024 and to an Athens court ruling of April 11, 2025, that cleared Yegor Sak of charges. These are the company's own words; we haven't seen the reports.
  • Jurisdiction. Canada; disputes under the terms of service are settled by the courts of Toronto.

The service's security doesn't answer the main question for Russia: whether it will connect on your network today.

What to replace Windscribe with: alternatives

Look for a replacement among VPNs that disguise traffic and work without a Russian card. To be fair, Windscribe is stronger in its free plan, number of countries, Windows and Linux apps and open source code. It is weaker where it matters in Russia: payment and connection stability.

Why we recommend BessyConnect

We recommend BessyConnect to those for whom Windscribe won't connect in Russia or who can't pay for it. It runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to the carrier, the traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS connection, and you don't need to cycle through protocols and profiles. There are more than a hundred servers, no logs are kept, registration is optional, and there is a trial period.

Where Windscribe is stronger, to put it plainly. It has a free plan with no time limit, clients for Windows and Linux, browser extensions and open source code. BessyConnect has no Windows app, and it can't be installed on a Windows computer yet.

BessyConnect apps:

What neither BessyConnect, nor Windscribe, nor any other VPN solves. If mobile internet has been restricted to whitelists, a VPN as a rule won't help. And BessyConnect, like Windscribe, isn't in the Russian App Store: on an iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.

If Windscribe connects for you and 10 GB is enough, keep using it. If it won't connect or you can't pay for Pro, try BessyConnect: all versions are on the download page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windscribe work in Russia in 2026? Intermittently. In January 2026, Windscribe reported a drop in traffic of about 90% due to a new wave of blocking; between February and April, AmneziaWG and Circumvent Censorship mode were built into the apps. Whether it connects depends on the carrier, and the company gives no guarantees.

How much does Windscribe give for free? 10 GB a month with a confirmed email and 2 GB without it, with servers in 10 countries. You can get an extra 5 GB a month, once, for a post about Windscribe on X.

How do I pay for Windscribe from Russia? Directly, it is difficult: Mir and SBP aren't among the payment methods, Russian Visa cards haven't worked abroad since March 2022, and Mastercard, according to Windscribe, has been declining payments to it since December 2022. That leaves cryptocurrency, a foreign card, cash by mail for annual Pro and intermediaries at your own risk.

Is Windscribe available for PC? Yes, there are clients for Windows 10 and later, macOS and Linux, plus extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Download them only from windscribe.com.

What can I replace Windscribe with in Russia? We recommend BessyConnect: VLESS with Reality camouflage, more than 100 servers, no logs and no mandatory registration, with a trial period. There are apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android and Android TV; none for Windows yet.
