The message "Gemini isn't available in your country" means that Google has determined your location or your account's region to be a country outside its list. Russia isn't on that list: according to Google's help center as of October 31, 2026, the Gemini web app is available in more than 230 countries and territories, but not in Russia or Belarus. Even with a VPN, Gemini sometimes still won't open, because Google looks at more than just the IP address. Below: how to figure out what exactly Google sees, in which countries Gemini works, and what you can do.
According to Google's help center, access to Gemini depends on your location, age and account type. In practice, the country Google has associated your account with is added to that: if your location or account region points to an unsupported country, the error appears.
In the help article "Sign in to Gemini Apps", Google says directly: if "Something went wrong" appears when you sign in, the app isn't currently available for your account, and this "could be due to your age, account type, or location". The same article lists the requirements: at least 13 for a personal account (older in some countries), at least 18 for a work account, and accounts managed with Family Link aren't allowed into the web version.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| "Gemini isn't available in your country" without a VPN | you're in Russia or Belarus | Gemini isn't served here; only connecting through a country on Google's list helps |
| The same message with a VPN on | requests to Google bypass the tunnel or DNS leaks | tunnel and DNS settings |
| "Something went wrong" | age, account type or account region | the date of birth in the account, whether it's a work or school account |
| Error in the phone app but not in the browser | the mobile app requires you to be in a supported country | the phone's location, the app store's country |
If you're abroad or regularly work with foreign services, we recommend BessyConnect: it's a VPN on the VLESS protocol with Reality camouflage, whose connection looks like ordinary HTTPS.
According to Google's official help article "Where you can use the Gemini web app", the service supports more than 40 languages, including Russian, and is available in more than 230 countries and territories. We checked the list on October 31, 2026: it has 242 entries, and Russia and Belarus aren't among them.
| Country | Gemini web app | Gemini API and AI Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan | yes | yes |
| Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey | yes | yes |
| Russia, Belarus | no | no |
| Iran, Cuba, Syria, North Korea | no | no |
| Mainland China | Workspace only | no |
| Hong Kong | yes | no |
The last row matters. Different Gemini products have different lists: Hong Kong is on the web app list but missing from the Gemini API and Google AI Studio list (the developer page was updated on October 22, 2026). If you get an error in AI Studio, check against its list, not the app's help article.
The Russian query «gemini не работает в Казахстане» ("gemini not working in Kazakhstan") comes up often, but Kazakhstan is on both lists. If Gemini won't open in Kazakhstan, the cause is most likely not the country: check your age and account type, or the region your account is associated with.
Gemini for iPhone isn't in the Russian App Store either. According to the Apple Lookup API as of October 31, 2026, the Google Gemini app is absent from the Russian storefront and available in the Kazakh and US ones.
Usually because some requests to Google bypass the tunnel and Google sees a Russian address. The second common reason: the account is associated with Russia rather than the country you're connecting through.
In summer 2026 the complaints increased. According to the outlets «Код» (Kod) and Meduza on August 14, from the evening of August 13 Gemini stopped opening for some users even with a VPN, including after switching between several servers. The outlets cited no comment from Google. The experts they quoted named two likely causes:
Both theories are assumptions; no one has officially confirmed them. But the first is easy to check yourself: see which sites your app routes outside the tunnel. How such splitting works and where to turn it off is described in the article on split tunneling.
The third technical cause is a DNS leak: the tunnel is on, but name lookups go to your ISP's DNS server. More on this in the article on DNS leaks.
Start by checking what exactly Google sees, rather than cycling through servers. The order is as follows:
If after these steps Gemini opens in the browser but not in the phone app, the issue is most likely the mobile app: according to Google's help center, it requires you to "be in a country or territory where the Gemini app is available".
A VPN only changes the address you connect from. It doesn't change your Google Account's country, your payment method or the terms of use.
Account country. In the section "Why is my account associated with a country?", Google explains: when you sign up, the account is associated with the region where it was created. If the account is more than a year old, it's associated with the region where you use the services most often, usually where you've spent the most time over the past year. Travel generally doesn't affect this; after a move, the region changes in about a year. One cause of a mismatch is named separately: using a VPN "to mask your IP address". If the region is wrong, Google offers to submit a change request.
Payment. Google suspended the Google Play billing system for users in Russia on March 10, 2022; purchases and subscriptions through Google Play from Russia don't go through. Connecting through another country doesn't change that.
Google's rules. The terms of service require compliance with applicable law, "including sanctions", and prohibit hacking or interfering with Google's systems and protective measures. Using a service from a country it doesn't serve is the user's decision, and the consequences for the account are the user's too. What happens to accounts that a service deems suspicious is covered in the article account blocked because of a VPN.
If you don't need Gemini specifically but a working AI assistant, a general breakdown of the barriers for Claude, Gemini and Midjourney is in the article VPN for AI tools, and ChatGPT is covered separately in VPN for ChatGPT.
For a secure connection to foreign services, including Gemini where it's supported, we recommend BessyConnect. It's a ready-made app: the servers are already inside, you don't need to look for keys or configure a client, and connection camouflage helps when the VPN itself is being filtered.
What else matters:
Apps are available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android and Android TV:
The limits are as follows. BessyConnect doesn't change your Google Account's country, doesn't enable paying for Google AI subscriptions from Russia and doesn't override Google's terms. There's no Windows app, so you won't be able to use Gemini through BessyConnect on a Windows computer. BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store either; on iPhone it's installed with an Apple Account from another country. And if Google associates your account with Russia based on usage history, changing your address won't fix that.
But if what you need is a stable encrypted connection on iPhone, Mac or Android, we recommend starting with BessyConnect: all versions are collected on the download page.
Why doesn't Gemini work even with a VPN? Most often, requests to Google domains bypass the tunnel, DNS leaks, or the browser passes on your location. Since August 2026 complaints have increased: according to «Код» (Kod), for some users even switching between several servers didn't help.
In which countries is Gemini available? According to Google's help center, the Gemini web app is available in more than 230 countries and territories, including Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Turkey. Russia and Belarus aren't on the list as of October 31, 2026.
Gemini isn't available in your country on iPhone: what should I do? The Google Gemini app isn't in the Russian App Store; it can only be installed with an Apple Account from another country. The Gemini web version in Safari works by the same rules as on a computer.
Can I change my Google Account's country? Google determines the account region itself: by where the account was created, and for accounts older than a year, by where you use the services most often. If it's wrong, Google offers to submit a region change request.
Is BessyConnect suitable for Gemini? BessyConnect provides a secure connection on VLESS with Reality camouflage, more than 100 servers and a trial period, so you can check whether Gemini works before paying. It doesn't change your Google Account's country or payment options, and there's no Windows app.
