Happ for desktop exists and is distributed free of charge: the installers for Windows, macOS and Linux sit on the releases page of the Happ-proxy project on GitHub, and the official site happ.su links to them. As of October 13, 2026, the current desktop version is 4.5.3, released that same day. For Mac there is also a separate version in the App Store. Happ itself contains no servers: after installing it, you need to add a key or subscription from your VPN service.
If you don't have a key yet and your computer is a Mac, our advice is not to piece together a client and someone else's key but to install BessyConnect from the App Store: the servers and the protocol are already inside. There is no BessyConnect app for Windows, and below we say plainly where Happ is stronger.
There are three official sources: the site happ.su (the project also has a new domain, happ.info), the releases page of the Happ-proxy/happ-desktop repository on GitHub, and the App Store for the Mac version. The Windows and "dmg" buttons on the site lead straight to the files of the latest release on GitHub, so the site and GitHub serve the same thing.
| System | File in release 4.5.3 | Size | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows x64 | setup-Happ.x64.exe | about 120 MB | A regular installer, suits most PCs |
| Windows on ARM | setup-Happ.arm64.exe | about 88 MB | For laptops with Snapdragon processors |
| macOS, Intel and Apple Silicon | Happ.macOS.universal.dmg | about 149 MB | One file for both processor types |
| macOS from the App Store | Happ - Proxy Utility, version 6.0.0 of October 5, 2026 | 361.4 MB | Publisher Flyfrog LLC; a different build with its own version numbering |
| Linux x64 and ARM64 | deb, rpm, pkg.tar.zst | 81–114 MB | Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora and RHEL, Arch |
The file names and sizes are taken from the releases page as of October 13, 2026 and change from version to version.
We did not find Happ in the Microsoft Store: the official site has no such link, and a search of the store catalog on October 13, 2026 did not return the app. Happ is, however, in the winget package repository under the identifier Happ.Happ; the latest version there is 4.5.2, and the manifest points to the same file on GitHub.
There is a catch with the App Store. The Happ site has two links for Mac: "Global" and "Rus". The first opens in the stores of the United States, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Germany, Belarus and Armenia. The second, to the Russian store, returned a 404 error on October 13, 2026. With a Russian Apple ID, the dmg is the more reliable choice.
Desktop Happ runs on Windows 10 starting with build 1809 and on Windows 11, and the dmg version requires macOS 13 or later. That is what the "System requirements" section of the Happ documentation says. The reason is that the desktop builds are made with Qt 6, which older systems don't support.
The order is the same on Windows and Mac: install the program, copy the link from your service, paste it with the plus button, choose a server and connect.
vless://… or a subscription link. A subscription can be ordinary, which is a web address, or encrypted, which starts with happ://crypto.Happ understands vless://, vmess://, trojan://, ss://, socks://, hysteria2:// and hy2:// links. You get a key from whoever owns the server; Happ itself neither issues nor sells them. What is inside such a string and why public free keys are risky is covered in the article VPN key. What the app is overall, we described in the Happ review.
Proxy suits the browser; TUN is needed when every program has to go through the server. In Proxy mode Happ sets the system proxy, and only apps that read the system settings use it. In TUN mode a virtual network adapter is created, and all of the computer's traffic goes into the tunnel.
| Proxy | TUN | |
|---|---|---|
| What goes through the server | Browsers and programs that respect the system proxy | All traffic, including games and messengers |
| When to choose it | You need to open sites in a browser | A program "doesn't see" the connection |
| What it costs you | Some programs will go past the tunnel | A higher chance of a conflict with another VPN or a network driver |
In version 4.5.2 of October 9, 2026, TUN on Windows changed: according to the changelog, tun2proxy now works without administrator rights, and the separate split tunneling driver is no longer needed. Older guides that advise always running Happ as administrator were written for the previous versions.
Fine-tuning is there too. Per-App Proxy sets which programs go through the server, and Exclude routes removes addresses from the tunnel; 4.5.2 added an app block list and IPv6 support to them.
Most often the culprit is not Happ but the link, the server or a second network program. First look at which step everything stops on: when adding the subscription, when connecting, or after that.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Clipboard is empty" | The link wasn't copied | Copy the whole key and try again |
| "Subscription URL is not valid" | The link has extra characters or is cut off | Compare the link with what the service gave you |
| Timeout when adding a subscription | The subscription server didn't respond within 9 seconds | Try again from another network, write to the service |
| A subscription with a device limit doesn't load | A bug in versions before 4.5.3 | Update Happ |
| TUN with no internet access | Another VPN or a network filter is interfering | Close the second program; 4.5.2 shows a warning about this |
| No connection after the computer wakes from sleep | A bug in older versions, fixed in 4.4.8 | Update Happ, run Reset service |
| The program won't start | Windows 7, 8 or an old build of Windows 10 | Update the system or take release 1.0.2 |
The wording of the first three errors and the 9-second limit are taken from the Errors section of the Happ documentation, the rest from the changelogs of versions 4.4.8, 4.5.2 and 4.5.3.
Two more cases are described in third-party guides, for example by CookieVPN in December 2025. Sites don't open if another VPN client or a VPN browser extension is on at the same time. And if you close Happ without turning off the connection, the internet may disappear: start the program again, disconnect with the button and only then close it. When a security program blocks the installer or the network service, the article antivirus is blocking the VPN will help.
Check three things: where the file was downloaded from, who signed it and whether the checksum matches. The real installer lives only in the Happ-proxy/happ-desktop repository and is signed by the publisher Flyfrog LLC.
certutil -hashfile setup-Happ.x64.exe SHA256 on Windows or shasum -a 256 on Mac. The strings must match.Be more careful with the stores. In the Russian App Store on October 13, 2026, a search for the word Happ returned several apps from other publishers with similar names, and the Flyfrog LLC app was not among them. In the description of the real Happ the developer warns about this directly: the app doesn't sell a VPN, and "official Happ VPNs" are offered by scammers.
The project is popular, so faking it pays off: the version 4.3.0 installer for Windows x64 was downloaded from GitHub about 740,000 times. How Happ differs from its closest counterpart is covered in the comparison Incy or Happ, and installing the second client is described in the guide Incy on a PC.
Happ is only a shell: you will have to find a key, keep track of its expiry and change servers yourself. BessyConnect is a service with its own app, where the servers are already inside. That is why we recommend it to those who need a working VPN rather than a client to configure.
Apps:
Now, honestly. There is no BessyConnect app for Windows, and none for Linux either. On those systems Happ is the stronger client: it has installers for Windows x64 and ARM, packages for Linux and support for several protocols, including Hysteria2. BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store; to install it on a Mac or iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.
And about what neither BessyConnect nor a VPN in general solves. It won't cure a computer that already has a fake installer on it, and it won't extend an expired subscription with someone else's service. If your key has stopped working, that is a question for whoever issued it.
The bottom line is this. If you have Windows and already have a key from your service, install Happ from GitHub and check the signature. If you have a Mac, a phone or a TV and no key, we recommend BessyConnect: the app for your device is on the download page.
Where can I download Happ VPN for PC for free? On the official site happ.su or on the Happ-proxy/happ-desktop releases page on GitHub. The program is free; what may be paid is the server whose key you add to it.
Is there Happ for Windows 7? Current versions require Windows 10 build 1809 or Windows 11. For Windows 7 the Happ documentation offers the old release 1.0.2 of November 2025, which is no longer updated.
Do I need a key for Happ on a PC? Yes. Without a key or a subscription link from a third-party server Happ won't connect anything: it has no servers of its own.
Why isn't TUN working in Happ on a PC? Usually a second VPN client or a network filter is in the way. Close it, update Happ to 4.5.2 or later and, if that doesn't help, switch to Proxy mode for the time being.
Is there BessyConnect for a computer? For Mac, yes, in the App Store, and that is the one we recommend if you don't have a key. There is no BessyConnect app for Windows.
