VPN for Yandex Browser: extension or app, and how to install it

Yandex Browser is built on Chromium, so it takes the same VPN extensions as Chrome: from the Yandex add-on catalog or straight from the Chrome Web Store. Installation takes a minute. But an extension only covers browser tabs: Telegram, games, your mail client and every other app on the computer still go online directly. If you need access beyond websites, install a VPN app, not an extension.

Queries like "vpn for yandex browser", "yandex vpn extension" and "vpn for yandex" together get more than 100,000 impressions a month in Russian search (Yandex Wordstat, August–September 2026). Below: where to install from, what to choose and why some extensions stop working.

How to install a VPN extension in Yandex Browser

There are two ways, both built in.

From the Yandex catalog:

  1. Open the menu (three lines, top right) → "Add-ons".
  2. At the bottom of the page, click "Yandex Browser extensions catalog".
  3. Find a VPN extension, click "Add to Yandex Browser" and confirm.

From the Chrome Web Store:

  1. Open chromewebstore.google.com directly in Yandex Browser.
  2. Find the extension and click "Add". The browser will offer to install it.

The extension icon appears to the right of the address bar, and you turn it on and off there. To remove it, go to "Menu → Add-ons" at the end of the list.

The Yandex catalog has a noticeably smaller selection than the Chrome Web Store. If the extension you want isn't there, install it from Google's store: it's the same extension format.

What an extension protects and what it doesn't

This is the key thing to understand before choosing.

VPN extensionVPN app
Websites in Yandex BrowserYesYes
Other browsersNoYes
Telegram, Discord, games, mail clientsNoYes
DNS queriesOften bypass the tunnelGo through the tunnel
The whole deviceNoYes
Camouflaged protocolsUsually not, it's an HTTP proxyYes, if the service supports them

Most VPN extensions technically aren't VPNs but browser proxies: they route tab requests through their server and leave the rest of the system alone. Detailed comparison: VPN extension or app.

Why the VPN extension in Yandex Browser stopped working

The most common reasons, in descending order:

  • The extension's server is blocked. Free extensions use ordinary proxy protocols that filters recognize easily. Works today, not tomorrow.
  • The extension was removed from the store. If it's pulled from the catalog, it may stay in the browser but stop getting updates and new server addresses.
  • Two extensions conflict. Two proxy extensions at once interfere with each other: only the last installed one works, or neither.
  • Another VPN is on in the system. An extension on top of a VPN app gives you a double tunnel with extra latency, and sometimes no connection at all. Why that's usually unnecessary, we covered in two VPNs at once.

If everything stopped opening at once, the general troubleshooting order is in why a VPN isn't working.

The risks of a free extension

An extension with permission to "read and change data on all websites" has access to everything you do in the browser: addresses, forms, session cookies. A free extension has no subscription, so it makes money in other ways: ads, selling statistics, and in the worst cases, stealing accounts. An example: in February 2026 it was reported that malicious extensions from the Chrome Web Store, including a "VK theme" add-on with 400,000 installs and good reviews, hijacked more than 500,000 VKontakte accounts (Anti-Malware.ru).

Before installing, check:

  • who the developer is and whether they have a website with a privacy policy;
  • when the last update was (a year without updates is a bad sign);
  • which permissions the extension asks for and whether they fit its purpose.

How attackers use stolen cookies, we wrote about in the article on infostealers and stolen sessions.

Yandex and VPN: what will break

Yandex Browser works normally with a VPN on, but some Russian services behave differently when they see a foreign IP:

  • Kinopoisk and some video services may limit the catalog or playback;
  • banking sites and Gosuslugi sometimes ask for extra verification or refuse access;
  • Yandex Maps and search show results for the server's country until you set your city manually.

The fix is split tunneling: Russian sites go directly, everything else through the VPN. In an extension this is usually an exclusion list of sites; in an app, per-app or per-domain settings. Details: split tunneling.

When to install an app instead of an extension

An extension is enough if you need one or two sites in the browser and nothing else. You need an app if:

  • you use Telegram, Discord or games on the same computer;
  • extensions quickly stop working because of blocking;
  • privacy matters: DNS and all traffic should go through the tunnel.

Installing a VPN on a Windows or macOS computer is covered in VPN on PC.

Why BessyConnect is an app, not an extension

BessyConnect protects the whole device at once, including Yandex Browser and any other programs. It runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage, so to filters it looks like ordinary HTTPS and doesn't drop where proxy extensions get cut. There are more than a hundred servers, no logs, no required registration and no device limit: phone, laptop and TV on one account.

Honestly about the limits: BessyConnect has no separate browser extension. If for some reason you need protection for just one tab, we're not the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on a VPN in Yandex Browser? Install a VPN extension from the Yandex catalog ("Menu → Add-ons → Extensions catalog") or from the Chrome Web Store, then switch it on with the icon to the right of the address bar.

Does Yandex Browser have a built-in VPN? No. Turbo mode compresses traffic, but it isn't a VPN and doesn't bypass blocks. You need a third-party service: an extension or a system-wide app.

Can I install Chrome Web Store extensions in Yandex Browser? Yes. Yandex Browser is built on Chromium and installs extensions from the Chrome store natively.

Why isn't the VPN extension working in Yandex Browser? Most often the free extension's server is blocked, the extension was removed from the store, or it conflicts with another VPN. Check that two VPNs aren't on at once, and try a VPN app.

Is a free VPN extension safe? It depends on the developer. An extension has access to everything you do in the browser, so only install ones with a clear owner, a privacy policy and recent updates.
