Zapret, GoodbyeDPI and ByeDPI are not VPNs. They don't send traffic to someone else's server and don't change your IP address. The program runs right on your computer or phone and slightly "garbles" the first packets of a connection so that the provider's filtering system (DPI) can't recognize which site you're contacting. That's why they help with YouTube and Discord, which are throttled by site name in Russia, but are powerless where a service is blocked by IP address or has left the country on its own. And that's why they regularly "stop working": filters get updated, and bypass strategies have to be picked again.

The best-known build is Flowseal/zapret-discord-youtube on GitHub: a set of ready-made Windows scripts that launch zapret with tuned strategies for YouTube and Discord. The original project is bol-van/zapret.
When you open a site over HTTPS, the first packet of the connection carries the site name (SNI) in plain text. DPI uses it to decide whether to throttle the connection. The mechanism is explained in what DPI is and SNI and ECH.
Zapret and similar tools step in at this moment: they split the first packet into pieces, send a fake packet with wrong parameters, or reorder fragments. The server reassembles the connection correctly, while the filter gets confused and lets the traffic through. Encryption stays ordinary HTTPS, and no intermediary sees your traffic.

Download only from the official repositories: Flowseal/zapret-discord-youtube, bol-van/zapret, ValdikSS/GoodbyeDPI, hufrea/byedpi. Take files from Releases, not from archives inside someone's copies.
Block-bypassing utilities are what gets faked most often now. In July 2026, Solar 4RAYS described fake repositories of a popular Telegram utility with the Salat and Santa stealers inside.
