Hotspot Shield is an American VPN from Pango (formerly AnchorFree) with a free Basic mode and a paid Premium plan, its own Hydra protocol and apps for Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and TVs. The iPhone app has been around since 2011, and the service has more than 100 million installs on Google Play. But in Russia in 2026 it is a struggle: on September 26, 2024, the app disappeared from the Russian App Store, it isn't on RuStore, and the company doesn't claim a traffic camouflage mode for countries with heavy blocking.
If you need a VPN that disguises traffic as an ordinary HTTPS connection and works without registration, we recommend BessyConnect. Below is a breakdown of Hotspot Shield based on primary sources and an honest comparison.
There are no guarantees. Roskomnadzor hasn't named Hotspot Shield itself in its public lists, but the app has disappeared from the Russian App Store, the official version isn't on RuStore, and VPN protocols themselves are increasingly blocked at the network level in Russia. Connecting sometimes works, but that depends on the carrier, the protocol and the day.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| September 3, 2021 | Roskomnadzor announced the blocking of NordVPN, ExpressVPN, IPVanish, Hola, VPN Unlimited and Speedify. Hotspot Shield isn't on the list | Meduza |
| December 2, 2021 | Roskomnadzor decided to block six more services, including Betternet. That is another VPN from the same Pango group | Mediazona |
| July 4 – September 18, 2024 | Apple quietly removed almost 60 VPN apps from the Russian App Store | Novaya Gazeta Europe, citing GreatFire, September 25, 2024 |
| September 26, 2024 | Hotspot Shield recorded as removed from the Russian App Store | AppleCensorship (GreatFire) |
| January 24, 2026 | Amnezia VPN founder Mazay Banzaev: only protocols that disguise themselves as other network protocols work in Russia | TechRadar |
| October 26, 2026 | Russian App Store: the app page returns 404, search returns 0 results. The app is available in Kazakhstan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia and Turkey | check of Apple's catalog |
Apple doesn't give a reason for the removal. AppleCensorship allows for a government demand as well as a decision by Apple or the developer.
Hotspot Shield's help center has a telling detail. In its guide to connection problems on iOS, the company asks you to let it know if you are in Pakistan, Iran, Oman, Qatar, China, the UAE or Saudi Arabia. Russia isn't on that list, and there is no separate guide for it either. Why standard VPNs stop connecting is covered in detail in our article why a VPN isn't working.
Hotspot Shield is a VPN from Pango, LLC of Boston, formerly known as AnchorFree. The first iPhone version came out on October 29, 2011. From July 2020, Pango belonged to Aura, and on September 3, 2024, Aura spun it off into a separate Pango Group. Besides Hotspot Shield, the group includes Betternet, Touch VPN, VPN 360, Ultra VPN and other brands.
| Parameter | Data as of October 26, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Developer | Pango, LLC (Boston, USA); the App Store seller is AnchorFree, LLC |
| App Store (US) | version 8.48.0 of October 22, 2026, rating 4.6 from 364 thousand ratings |
| Google Play | 100M+ installs, 4.5 from 1.63 million reviews, updated October 8, 2026 |
| Servers | 1,800+ servers, virtual locations in 80+ countries and 35+ cities |
| Protocols | Hydra (proprietary), WireGuard, IPsec, OpenVPN |
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Smart TV, Chrome extension; Linux and routers only with Premium |
| Devices per subscription | up to 10 (Premium), up to 25 (Premium Family) |
| Russian language in the iOS app | no: the App Store lists only English and Arabic |
The service's main technical feature is the Hydra protocol, which Pango developed itself. In its 2023 report, the auditor Aon describes three Hotspot Shield protocols: IPSec, OpenVPN and Hydra. Reviews more often call it Catapult Hydra (Gizmodo, for example). The source code is closed.
There is a Russian version of the website, but it is noticeably outdated: it still says "650 million users", while the Google Play description already says "more than 800 million downloads".
Lookalikes. The most noticeable lookalike lives precisely in the Russian App Store. Where the original is absent, a search for "hotspot shield" on October 26, 2026, returns the app «Hotspot Shield ВПН: Хеши» (Hotspot Shield VPN: Hashes) from EG PR RICAMBI SH.P.K. It was released on September 29, 2026, version 1.0.0. Despite "VPN" in the name, it isn't a VPN but a utility for checking SHA-256 and SHA-512 file checksums. It has nothing to do with Pango.
Two more cases of confusion:
How to recognize the genuine app: in the App Store the seller is AnchorFree, LLC, on Google Play the developer is Pango, LLC, and the website is hotspotshield.com. How to check the rest is covered in our article on fake VPN apps.
There is a free Basic mode, but with limits on speed, traffic and locations, and you pay for it by watching ads. Premium costs $7.99 a month on the website when paid annually. Official sources describe the exact Basic terms differently.
| Hotspot Shield source | What it says about free mode |
|---|---|
| Pricing page on the website | up to 2 Mbps, 500 MB a day, 1 location (US), 1 device |
| Help article "What virtual locations are offered" | 5 options: Auto, Los Angeles, New York, Singapore, United Kingdom |
| App Store description | unlimited traffic on the free VPN, with ads |
We checked on October 26, 2026. Which version applies to your device will only become clear after installing. One thing is clear: Basic is no good for video. The pricing page says "limited streaming in SD", and the help center warns that on Netflix, Hulu and BBC, instead of the video you will see an offer to buy Premium.
Premium prices as of October 26, 2026:
Paying from Russia is difficult. Hotspot Shield's help center describes paying by card and via PayPal, and back on March 5, 2022, Visa announced that cards issued in Russia wouldn't work abroad.
According to Yandex suggestions, people often search for «ключи для hotspot shield» (keys for hotspot shield) and «hotspot shield vpn mod». Hotspot Shield has no keys in the sense of VLESS links: Premium is tied to an account, and activation codes are entered in the account dashboard under Account Info → Redeem. "Free keys", cracks and mod versions from third-party sites are someone else's builds with unknown code. We explained why they are dangerous in the article on cracked VPNs and mod APKs.
Hotspot Shield's help center names three official sources: the hotspotshield.com website for Windows, the App Store for Mac and iPhone, and Google Play for Android. For the browser there is an extension in the Chrome Web Store. Builds from file-sharing sites aren't official.
What to do with a Russian account:
There is one important thing to understand about the extension. It is a proxy for the browser: other programs on the computer bypass the tunnel. How to add a VPN to Yandex's browser and how an extension differs from an app is covered in the article VPN for Yandex Browser.
If Hotspot Shield won't connect in Russia, the cause is almost always on the network side: the carrier recognizes the VPN protocol or blocks the server's IP address. This can be fixed from the app only partially. The order below is based on Hotspot Shield's iOS help; the logic is the same on Android and a computer.
What no settings will fix. In January 2026, Proton VPN general manager David Peterson told TechRadar that the Russian authorities block the IP addresses and entire ranges of VPN servers. Even a DPI-resistant protocol may need several attempts. Hotspot Shield has no separate camouflage mode for censored countries, so support is unlikely to help with Russia.
Based on public data, the service has passed one independent audit of its no-logs policy, and in the past it faced a high-profile complaint about data collection. Free mode is funded by advertising, and this shows in the declarations in the app stores.
What is known as of October 26, 2026:
The declarations in the two stores differ noticeably, and they can't be verified from the outside: Apple states plainly that it hasn't verified this information. The jurisdiction is the US, where Pango is headquartered.
For Russia, look for a replacement among services that disguise traffic as ordinary protocols: according to Banzaev, those are mainly what work in 2026. To be honest about Hotspot Shield's strengths: it has more servers and platforms, including Windows, Linux and Smart TV, a free mode and an Aon audit. It is weaker where it matters most in Russia: no camouflage mode, no app in the Russian App Store and no Russian language in the iOS version.

Data from the App Store, help centers and service websites as of October 26, 2026. We wrote more about Proton in our review Proton VPN and AdGuard VPN in Russia. If you need the simple one-button apps that people use in Russia, see our roundup of popular VPNs in Russia.
We recommend BessyConnect to those for whom Hotspot Shield won't connect or won't install from a Russian account. It runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to the carrier, the traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS connection. There are more than a hundred servers, no logs are kept, registration is optional, and there is a trial period.
Where Hotspot Shield is stronger, to put it plainly. It has far more servers, apps for Windows, Linux and Smart TV, a browser extension, a permanent free mode and a published audit. BessyConnect has no Windows app.
BessyConnect apps:
What neither BessyConnect, nor Hotspot Shield, nor any other VPN solves. If mobile internet has been restricted to whitelists, a VPN as a rule won't help. BessyConnect can't be installed on a Windows computer yet. And BessyConnect, like Hotspot Shield, isn't in the Russian App Store: on an iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.
If Hotspot Shield connects for you and you are happy with it, keep using it. If it won't connect or the free 2 Mbps isn't enough, try BessyConnect: all versions are on the download page.
Does Hotspot Shield VPN work in Russia? There are no guarantees. Roskomnadzor hasn't named it in its public lists, but on September 26, 2024, the app disappeared from the Russian App Store, it isn't on RuStore, and the service doesn't claim a traffic camouflage mode. Whether it connects depends on the carrier and the protocol.
Is Hotspot Shield free? There is a free Basic mode with ads. The website lists the limits: up to 2 Mbps, 500 MB a day and one location in the US, although the help center names five locations. Premium costs from $7.99 a month when paid annually.
How do I download Hotspot Shield on a PC? The Windows installer is only on the hotspotshield.com website, and the Mac version is in the App Store. Don't install a "Hotspot Shield crack" or builds from file-sharing sites: these are unofficial copies with unknown code.
Is Hotspot Shield available in Russian? The website has been translated into Russian, but the Russian page is outdated. According to the App Store as of October 26, 2026, the iOS app is available only in English and Arabic.
What can I replace Hotspot Shield with in Russia? We recommend BessyConnect: VLESS with Reality camouflage, more than 100 servers, no logs and no mandatory registration, with a trial period. There are apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android and Android TV; none for Windows yet.
