A blocked website looks the same everywhere: the page never loads, an app hangs on "connecting", a messenger refuses to send photos. The reasons differ — an internet provider, a network administrator or the service itself — and the reason decides which workaround will actually help.
This guide explains how modern blocking works, which bypass methods still hold up in 2026, which ones stopped working years ago, and what to do when your VPN says "connected" but nothing loads.
Before choosing a tool, it helps to know what exactly is standing in the way.
IP blocking. The simplest approach: traffic to certain addresses is dropped. The service disappears completely, including its mobile app.
DNS blocking. A domain lookup returns the wrong address or an error even though the server is running fine. The site "does not exist" only for that provider's customers.
Domain and URL filtering. Equipment inspects the requested address and cuts the connection if the domain is on a list. This is often used to close a single section of a site rather than the whole resource.
DPI — deep packet inspection. The most advanced layer. It looks not only at where a connection goes, but at what it looks like, recognising VPN protocols by their fingerprints and throttling those specifically. DPI is the reason legacy protocols such as PPTP, L2TP and plain OpenVPN keep failing.
Geo-restrictions. Here the limit comes from the service itself: streaming libraries, banking apps and stores serve selected countries only. It is not censorship — the company simply limits its service region.
Corporate and school networks. An administrator closes social media, streaming or games at the local network level.
A VPN encrypts your traffic and routes it through a server abroad. Your provider sees a connection to that server, not the sites you open.
The protocol is what matters in 2026. Legacy solutions are fingerprinted by DPI within seconds and blocked along with the server. What still works are protocols that make traffic look like an ordinary HTTPS session: VLESS with Reality, XTLS, and obfuscation layered over WireGuard.
Pros: covers every app at once, not just the browser; encrypts the whole connection; solves both provider blocks and geo-restrictions.
Cons: a reliable service requires a subscription; free VPNs often monetise user data instead.
A proxy replaces your IP address but, unlike a VPN, usually leaves traffic unencrypted and has to be configured per application.
Pros: quick to set up, minimal speed cost.
Cons: DPI recognises most open proxies; data travels unprotected; public proxy lists are short-lived and frequently unsafe.
The Tor network routes traffic through three random relays and offers strong anonymity.
Pros: free, serious protection against tracking.
Cons: noticeably slower because of triple relaying; entry nodes are blocked by DPI, so bridges are required; video calls and streaming are effectively unusable.
If a site is closed at the DNS level only, switching to an encrypted resolver — DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS — is enough. Both browsers and mobile systems have the setting built in.
Pros: free, no speed penalty, native to the system.
Cons: useless against IP blocking and DPI, which covers most modern restrictions.
A word about advice that still circulates in older articles. Browser turbo modes and "data saver" features no longer defeat serious filtering. Web anonymisers see your traffic in the clear and should never be used to sign into accounts. Public mirror sites regularly turn out to be phishing copies.
A classic situation: the app reports a successful connection, yet pages time out. Usually one of four things is happening.
iPhone and iPad. An App Store app is enough: the VPN profile is added to the system and protects every application. If you used other services before, remove the old profiles under General — VPN and Device Management.
Android. The app asks for permission to create a VPN connection. It is worth enabling "block connections without VPN" so traffic never leaks during reconnection.
Windows and macOS. The client installs like any other program. For stability, allow it to run in the background and add it to firewall exceptions.
Router. Configuring a VPN on the router covers every device in the home at once, including TVs and consoles that have no apps of their own. It takes more effort but removes per-device setup.

Does a VPN slow down the internet? A small drop is unavoidable because traffic passes through an extra server. Losing 10–30 percent is normal. A bigger drop means it is time to change servers.
Do I need a VPN on my phone if the router already has one? Not at home. Outside — on mobile data and public Wi-Fi — the phone app is your only protection.
Can changing DNS replace a VPN? Only against DNS-level blocking. It does nothing against IP filtering or DPI.
Blocking has become smarter: filters now target the shape of your traffic rather than a list of addresses. That is why old protocols and web anonymisers no longer solve the problem, while a VPN with modern masking does.
