As of early October 2026, Turkey blocks Discord (since October 9, 2024) and Wattpad (since July 2024), and Roblox has formally never been unblocked, even though many media outlets reported its return on June 18, 2026. Instagram, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram and Wikipedia work, but social networks are regularly throttled during protests and major events. Tourists themselves more often need a VPN in Turkey not for Turkish blocks but for the opposite task: opening Russian services that don't let in users from foreign addresses.
The scale of Turkish censorship is large. According to the Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD) report for 2025, summarized by the Stockholm Center for Freedom, more than 232,000 websites and domains were blocked in Turkey in 2025 alone, and about 1.5 million since 2018.
Discord and Wattpad are permanently blocked, Roblox's status is disputed, and the websites of most VPN services don't open. Major social networks are available but periodically throttled.
| Service | Status in Turkey (October 2026) | Since |

Tests from Istanbul, updated by Nomad Istanbul in October 2026, confirm the same picture: Discord and Roblox are unavailable, and 8 of the 10 VPN provider websites tested don't open.
No, Discord has been blocked in Turkey since October 9, 2024 by a decision of the Ankara 1st Criminal Court of Peace. The grounds were accusations that child abuse material and obscene content were being distributed on Discord servers.
On June 5, 2026 Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said Discord "now meets our criteria" on content removal and promised a quick unblocking (Türkiye Today, 05.06.2026). No specific date was given, and as of October 2026 Discord doesn't open from Turkish networks without a VPN. We covered how to set up the connection separately: VPN for Discord.
Officially, no. Roblox was blocked on August 7, 2024. On June 18, 2026 a number of outlets and Family Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş reported it had been unblocked. The minister's tweet was soon deleted, and Turkish media as of September 13, 2026 write that the court decision on the block has not been overturned.
Hence the confusion in Yandex suggestions: "roblox unblocked in turkey" and "roblox blocked in turkey" sit side by side. For some users the game opens, for others it doesn't, so a reliable answer of "it works" doesn't exist yet. More on the game under blocks: VPN for Roblox.
Most often it's not a block but temporary throttling during political events. Instagram was fully blocked once: from August 2 to 10, 2024, for 9 days. Access was restored after negotiations with Meta, as announced by the same Minister Uraloğlu.
Since then the authorities have used another tool: throttling. After Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained on March 19, 2025, X, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Telegram were throttled; according to İFÖD, the restrictions in Istanbul lasted about 42 hours. On September 7–8, 2025, during the police blockade of the CHP party headquarters in Istanbul, NetBlocks recorded restrictions on X, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp. If your feed won't load while the rest of the internet works fine, it's almost certainly such throttling. About Instagram itself: VPN for Instagram.
On ordinary days you don't need a VPN for Turkish social networks and Telegram. You need it for Discord and for Russian services: Gosuslugi, banks, marketplaces and airline websites often don't let in users from foreign addresses.
On April 21, 2026 vc.ru wrote that tourists in Turkey, Egypt, Thailand and Vietnam were left without access to Russian services: their owners had received instructions from the Ministry of Digital Development to restrict access when a VPN is detected. It's a trap. Without a VPN you're a foreign user to the service, and with a VPN you're blocked for the VPN itself.

Yes, as of October 2026 Turkey has no law punishing private individuals for the mere fact of using a VPN. The restrictions target providers: according to İFÖD, in 2025 the authorities blocked 454 server addresses of 26 VPN services.
In April 2026 İFÖD and Professor Yaman Akdeniz reported upcoming amendments to the electronic communications law. Under the draft, VPN providers will have to register a local company in Turkey, and operating without a permit would expose them to fines of 1 to 30 million lira and traffic throttling. For now this is a draft, not a law in force.
An important caveat: a VPN changes only how you connect, not the applicable law. Posts that are considered a crime in Turkey (for example, insulting the president or "terrorist propaganda") remain criminally punishable regardless of how you got online.
The main rule: install and pay for everything at home. Many VPN and eSIM store websites don't open from Turkey.
Turkish providers recognize and cut standard VPN protocols, so camouflage matters. BessyConnect runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to filters the traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS. There are more than 100 servers, no logs, registration isn't required, there's no device limit, and there's a trial period. In one app you can keep both a European server for Discord and a Russian one for sites that need a Russian address.
Install the app before departure. BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store, so on iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.
What a VPN doesn't solve: it won't bring the internet back if the network is shut off or throttled entirely, won't help you pay for something with a Russian card in Turkey and won't get around a bank that refuses login to any VPN connection. For the bank, roaming remains the option in that case.
Do I need a VPN in Turkey? For Instagram, X, WhatsApp and Telegram on ordinary days, no. You need a VPN for Discord, Wattpad, during social media throttling and for Russian services that don't let in foreign addresses.
Does Telegram work in Turkey without a VPN? Yes, Telegram isn't blocked in Turkey. It was only throttled during protests, for example after March 19, 2025.
When will Discord be unblocked in Turkey? There's no date. In June 2026 Transport Minister Uraloğlu spoke of a quick unblocking, but as of October 2026 Discord is still unavailable without a VPN.
Is Wikipedia blocked in Turkey? No. Wikipedia was blocked from April 2017, but on December 26, 2019 Turkey's Constitutional Court ruled the block unlawful, and access was restored in January 2020.
Can I download a VPN while already in Turkey? Sometimes yes, but the websites of most VPN services are blocked in Turkey. It's more reliable to install and test the app before the trip.
