Why Your VPN Disconnects by Itself (It's the Phone, Not the App)

Nine times out of ten the tunnel doesn't crash — the operating system unloads it to save battery. Android skins from Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, OPPO, realme and vivo are the strictest: each runs its own power manager on top of Android that closes background apps by its own rules. The fix isn't reinstalling the client; it's three settings hidden in three different places.

Telling the system apart from the network

Signs the phone is unloading the app:

  • the tunnel drops while the screen is off and comes back when you unlock it;
  • the VPN is gone after a night, but holds all day while you're using the phone;
  • a computer on the same account stays connected while the phone keeps dropping;
  • the connection notification disappears from the shade along with the connection.

Signs the problem is the network or the server:

  • drops happen mid-use with the screen on;
  • the rest of your internet stops working at the same moment;
  • the same thing happens on several devices on one network.

The second case is a connection problem: why your VPN isn't working.

Three settings to change on Android

Names differ between manufacturers; the substance is identical.

1. Remove battery optimisation for the app. Settings → Apps → your VPN client → Battery → choose "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise".

2. Allow autostart. A separate setting that doesn't exist in stock Android. On Xiaomi: Settings → Apps → Permissions → Autostart. On Huawei and Honor: Settings → Battery → App launch → switch the app to manual and enable all three toggles. OPPO, realme and vivo have a similar section in battery settings.

3. Lock the app in recents. On Xiaomi and several other skins the multitasking view has a padlock: a locked app survives a memory clear.

| Skin | Path | What it's called | |---|---|---| | Xiaomi (MIUI, HyperOS) | Settings → Apps → Permissions | Autostart | | Huawei, Honor (EMUI, MagicOS) | Settings → Battery → App launch | manual management, three toggles | | OPPO, realme (ColorOS) | Settings → Battery → Power management | allow background activity | | vivo (Funtouch, OriginOS) | Settings → Battery → Background consumption | high background usage allowed | | Samsung (One UI) | Settings → Device care → Battery | unrestricted apps | | Stock Android, Pixel | Settings → Apps → Battery | unrestricted |

On top of that, enable the system settings Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN under Settings → Network & internet → VPN → gear icon. Then the system itself keeps the tunnel up. What that does and its side effects: VPN kill switch.

What to check on iPhone

iOS unloads apps far less often, but it has its own causes:

  • Low Power Mode restricts background activity. Check Settings → Battery.
  • The VPN profile was removed. Settings → General → VPN & Device Management: the configuration should be there.
  • Connect on demand is off. Then the tunnel won't come up automatically when a network appears.
  • Network switching. Moving from Wi-Fi to mobile rebuilds the connection; a client with auto-reconnect does it in seconds, without one it hangs.

Why this happens to VPNs specifically

A VPN client is a background service holding a persistent connection and keeping the radio awake. To a power manager that's the ideal candidate for termination: it consumes power while the user isn't looking at the screen.

The uncomfortable conclusion: the more aggressively a skin saves battery, the more often your tunnel will drop, and only permissions fix it properly. How much a VPN really costs in battery terms: does a VPN drain your battery.

If the settings didn't help

In order of frequency:

  1. An overloaded server. Change location within the same country — drops often attach to one specific node.
  2. An outdated client. Masking methods are updated as filtering evolves; an old build may use an already-recognised variant.
  3. Weak signal. At one or two bars the connection rebuilds constantly, which looks exactly like the app disconnecting.
  4. A conflict with another VPN app. Android keeps one active tunnel; a second client left over from before takes it. Remove the extras.
  5. Antivirus or firewall. A common separate case: antivirus or firewall blocking your VPN.

How BessyConnect handles it

The client is built to run all day: automatic reconnection restores the tunnel on network changes without your involvement, and the kill switch on Apple devices stops traffic on a drop instead of releasing it in the clear. You can control the connection from an Apple Watch without unlocking the phone: VPN on Apple Watch. On Android, layer the system Always-on VPN setting on top — then keeping the tunnel alive is the operating system's job, not just the app's.

FAQ

Why does my VPN disconnect overnight? The system unloads background apps while the screen is off to save power. Remove battery optimisation for the client and allow autostart.

Where is autostart on Xiaomi? Settings → Apps → Permissions → Autostart. It's a separate setting that stock Android doesn't have, and without it the system closes the app after a memory clear.

Does Always-on VPN on Android help? Yes, it's the most reliable option: the operating system takes over keeping the tunnel up. The side effect is no internet at all without the VPN, including captive portal pages on guest networks.

Why does the tunnel vanish after an iPhone restart? Check whether connect on demand is enabled and whether the VPN profile still exists under device management.

Can weak signal cause disconnections? Yes. On an unstable network the connection rebuilds repeatedly, which looks identical to the app dropping on its own.
