FaceTime not working in Russia: what was blocked and how to call

FaceTime doesn't work in Russia because on December 4, 2025 Roskomnadzor announced restrictions on FaceTime voice and video calls. Outages began earlier, back in September 2025, and official confirmation only came in December. iMessage keeps working, and FaceTime calls go through over a VPN, as long as the VPN itself doesn't drop under the filters.

FaceTime was caught in the same wave of blocks as other services. Roskomnadzor blocked Roblox on December 3 (it was unblocked in June 2026), and Snapchat on the same day as FaceTime (The Moscow Times and Meduza, 04.12.2025).

Why FaceTime was blocked

The official reason reads as follows: according to law enforcement agencies, FaceTime "is used to organize and carry out terrorist acts on the territory of the country, recruit their perpetrators, and commit fraud and other crimes against our citizens" (Roskomnadzor statement of December 4, 2025, quoted by Habr and Fontanka).

There is a backstory. On August 13, 2025 Roskomnadzor restricted calls in WhatsApp and Telegram, and some iPhone users switched to FaceTime. A few months later it was restricted too. Apple did not comment on the block publicly.

What exactly doesn't work and what does

The restriction affects calls, not the whole Apple ecosystem. The FaceTime app is still there, it opens, contacts are visible, but the call doesn't connect. According to MacRumors, the caller sees a message that the person is unavailable, which is the same error as with an ordinary connection problem. That's why many people first look for a fault in their iPhone.

FeatureFrom Russia without a VPN
FaceTime video callsDon't connect
FaceTime audio callsDon't connect
FaceTime group callsDon't connect
iMessage (blue messages)Works
Regular calls and SMS through the carrierWork
Push notifications, iCloud, App StoreWork

Why iMessage was spared: messages go through the same Apple Push Notification service as notifications from all apps. Blocking iMessage without breaking push on every iPhone in the country is technically hard. As of July 1, 2026, according to iGuides, iMessage in Russia worked without delays.

FaceTime not working on iPhone: is it the block or a fault?

If FaceTime stopped connecting in Russia, it's almost certainly the block, not your iPhone. Resetting settings, signing in to your Apple ID again and reinstalling iOS won't help.

A quick check: call someone abroad over FaceTime with a VPN on. If the call goes through with the VPN but not without it, the phone is fine. If it fails even with the VPN, see the next section.

Does FaceTime work through a VPN

Yes, FaceTime works through a VPN: the restriction is applied at the network level, and an encrypted tunnel bypasses it. Both MacRumors and The Moscow Times wrote about this on the day of the block. Turn on the VPN, then open FaceTime and call. On iPhone the VPN profile is system-wide, so it routes FaceTime through the tunnel too.

An important detail that guides usually skip: both participants need a VPN only if both are in Russia. If one is in Moscow and the other in Yerevan, only the person in Moscow needs the tunnel.

Why calls over a VPN drop

With websites a VPN can "blink" and you won't notice: the page will finish loading. That doesn't work with a call. According to Apple's official port table (page updated 28.07.2026), FaceTime voice and video go over UDP using the RTP and RTCP protocols. It's a real-time stream: a packet that arrives half a second late is already useless.

Hence three requirements for a VPN for calls:

  1. The protocol must not be recognizable. Plain OpenVPN and WireGuard are recognized and cut in Russia by the TSPU system. More on how it works: what TSPU is.
  2. The tunnel must hold without reconnecting. Any break means "Call ended" for a call.
  3. The server must be close. For voice, latency matters more than speed. From central Russia it makes sense to pick the nearest European countries: which country to choose in a VPN.

Honestly about the limits: even camouflage gives no permanent guarantee. Kommersant wrote in December 2025 that the blocks had started to affect VLESS too, especially on mobile networks. So you need a service that updates its servers and settings, not a single key for years.

What to replace FaceTime with in Russia

If the person you're calling has no VPN, three options remain.

  • iMessage for texting, voice messages and photos. Works without a VPN.
  • A regular cellular call. Boring, but reliable and with no workarounds.
  • Russian video calling services. On December 4, 2025 URA.ru listed Max, VKontakte calls, Yandex Telemost and SaluteJazz among the replacements. Keep in mind that the human rights project "Na Svyazi", commenting to The Moscow Times, called Max a state-promoted messenger and doubted the privacy of conversations in it.

WhatsApp and Telegram calls have also been restricted since August 2025, so when moving away from FaceTime they don't help without a VPN either. An overview of options: 10 alternatives to WhatsApp and Telegram.

Why BessyConnect works for FaceTime

BessyConnect runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to filters the connection looks like an ordinary HTTPS website, so the tunnel holds where regular protocols drop. For a call that's what matters most. There are more than 100 servers, no logs, registration isn't required and there's no device limit, so you can install the VPN for yourself and for the parents you call. There's a trial period.

An iPhone quirk: BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store. To install the app you need an Apple ID from another country. Why that is and what to do: VPN disappeared from the App Store, and step-by-step setup is in how to set up a VPN on iPhone and iPad.

What a VPN doesn't solve: it won't help when mobile internet is completely shut off or the carrier uses whitelists, it won't change your App Store region and it won't solve paying with Russian cards.

Is it legal to make FaceTime calls through a VPN

For an ordinary person, simply using a VPN in Russia is not punished. But since September 1, 2025 amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses are in force: using a VPN became an aggravating circumstance, and advertising tools for bypassing blocks is prohibited (Interfax, 22.07.2025). A breakdown of the rules: is a VPN legal in Russia.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't FaceTime work in Russia? On December 4, 2025 Roskomnadzor announced restrictions on FaceTime voice and video calls. Users had noticed outages since September 2025.

Is FaceTime blocked in Russia or not? Yes, FaceTime calls are officially restricted. The app itself remains on the iPhone, but a call from a Russian network doesn't connect.

Does FaceTime work with a VPN? Yes, it does. For a stable call you need a VPN with traffic camouflage and a nearby server, otherwise the conversation will keep dropping.

Does iMessage work in Russia? Yes. The block affected FaceTime calls, while iMessage, according to iGuides as of July 2026, works without a VPN.

Why doesn't FaceTime work even with a VPN? Most often the VPN itself can't hold the connection: its protocol is recognized and cut. Check the tunnel on another service, choose the nearest server and restart FaceTime after connecting.
