Max abroad: does the messenger work and what to keep in mind when traveling

Yes, Max works abroad: the account is tied to a phone number, not to the country you're in, so chats and calls go through local Wi-Fi, an eSIM or roaming. Since March 5, 2026, according to a VK press release, you can register in Max with numbers from 40 countries. There are three limitations: you can only message a foreigner after you've added each other to contacts, the login code comes by SMS or a call to your number, and the Android version, according to an independent analysis, reports to the server when a VPN is on.

According to VK on October 2, 2026, Max's daily audience exceeded 90 million people, so the question affects many travelers.

Does Max work abroad with a Russian number?

It does. The Russian number is needed to log in and confirm, and messages go over the internet. Problems are more often not with Max itself but with the SMS code or the network.

On April 27, 2026 (Expert), the Ministry of Digital Development said that key Russian platforms work normally for users abroad, but restrictions are possible on the side of individual countries or providers. If there are failures over hotel Wi-Fi, the ministry advises switching to local mobile internet.

Before your trip, check one thing: whether you stay logged in. If Max asks you to log in again, the code will go to your Russian number. Under the Max user agreement (version of September 9, 2026), the company chooses the verification method itself: SMS, a flash call or a robot call, and the user bears the communication costs. In roaming, an incoming call or SMS may cost money, or may not arrive at all. What to do if the code doesn't arrive we covered separately: SMS codes not arriving abroad.

Which countries' numbers can you register in Max with?

Numbers from 40 countries; VK published the list on March 5, 2026. Europe, the USA and Israel are not on it: you can't register a new account with a German or American SIM.

Until November 2025, Max only accepted Russian and Belarusian numbers; on November 5, 2025 (Meduza) seven CIS countries were added, and on March 5, 2026 VK expanded the list to 40 countries.

The full list from the VK press release: Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, UAE, Cuba, Laos, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Bolivia, DR Congo, Republic of the Congo, Colombia, Grenada, Gambia, India, Iraq, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Kuwait, Lebanon, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Palau, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Tanzania.

Registration is standard: download the app, choose the country, enter the number and the SMS code. VK names the same list as the countries where Max can be downloaded. So on iPhone you look for the app in the store of the country your Apple ID is tied to.

Why can't you message a foreigner in Max?

Because with a user from another country, chats and calls only open after you've both added each other's numbers to contacts. VK calls this a security measure against fraudsters.

In practice, a Turkish hotel receptionist or a guide from Uzbekistan won't be able to message you first, even if they know your number. Save the contact on your side and ask the other person to do the same.

What happens to Max if you turn on a VPN?

According to an analysis on Habr, the Android version of Max reports to the server whether a VPN is on. We found no public confirmation that the messenger stops working because of this, although the query "max not working with vpn" does show up in Yandex suggestions.

On March 5, 2026, the author of runetfreedom published a reverse-engineering of Android version 26.4.3 on Habr. According to him, the app sends a HOST_REACHABILITY event to the server: an active-VPN flag, the IP address, the mobile operator code and the reachability of several addresses (Gosuslugi, Google servers, and in some versions Telegram and WhatsApp). The module, according to the author, is switched on by the server and can work selectively for individual accounts.

The same day, the Max press office told Habr that the IP is needed for WebRTC calls, requests to Apple and Google servers check notification delivery, and these mechanisms have nothing to do with VPNs. The author later updated the analysis: in update 26.7.1 the requests to WhatsApp and Telegram were removed, but the module itself remained.

There's also an opposite result. On September 9, 2026, another Habr author tested Max Desktop on Windows, where the VPN ran not on the computer but on a Keenetic router. He found no signs that the program recognized such a tunnel, but noted that the conclusion applies only to this setup. How apps detect a VPN in general we described here: how apps detect a VPN.

The practical takeaway for a trip: if you need Max all the time, don't run it through the VPN. Add it to the split tunneling exclusions. An exclusion changes the route of Max traffic, but whether it hides the tunnel itself from a check on the phone depends on the app version. The most reliable option is to turn the VPN off during a Max call.

Max in roaming and on a local SIM: which to choose

Max works in roaming, on a local SIM and over Wi-Fi. The difference is the price and where the login code goes. Why Telegram and WhatsApp fail on a Russian SIM in roaming is explained in blocks in roaming.

How you connectMaxWhat to keep in mind
Russian SIM in roamingWorksExpensive; the login code comes to the same number
Local SIM or eSIMWorks with your existing accountThe login code still goes to your Russian number
Hotel Wi-FiWorks if the network doesn't cut trafficThe Ministry of Digital Development advises switching networks if there are failures
New account on a number from one of the 40 countriesWorksCan message Russians only after mutually adding contacts
New account on an EU or US numberRegistration unavailableThese countries are not on the VK list
VPN on the phone turned onThe app sees the VPNBetter to exclude Max from the tunnel

Roaming remains the fallback for Russian services in general: the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (vc.ru, 21.04.2026) advised tourists in Turkey, Egypt, Thailand and Vietnam to access Gosuslugi and banks through roaming, even though it's more expensive. What else breaks for Russians abroad is collected in a separate piece: Russian services abroad.

What data does Max collect about you?

According to the Max privacy policy (version of September 25, 2026), the service processes your name and phone number, device data, IP address, OS and browser type, location, internet provider, address book (if you granted access), as well as clicks and navigation within the app.

A few more points from the same policy:

  • data is stored and processed in Russia; according to the document, there is no cross-border transfer;
  • the recipients listed include telecom operators (Beeline, MTS, MegaFon, T2), advertising and analytics partners, and developers of mini-apps inside Max;
  • data is transferred to government agencies upon official request in the manner provided by law;
  • when you confirm your account through Gosuslugi, Max receives data from ESIA with your consent.

This is a summary of the document, not an assessment. If you're looking for another messenger to stay in touch from abroad, see alternatives to WhatsApp and Telegram.

Why BessyConnect suits travel

When you travel, you need a VPN not for Max but for everything else: sites that are closed in the country you're in and services that refuse foreign addresses. BessyConnect runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage, so to filters the traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS. There are more than 100 servers, no logs, no required registration, no device limit, and there's a trial period. Max can be left outside the tunnel using split tunneling.

If you're installing the app on iPhone from Russia, keep in mind: BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store, you need an Apple ID from another country.

What a VPN doesn't solve. It won't deliver an SMS code to a Russian number, won't lift Max's mutual-contacts rule, doesn't guarantee that the app on your phone won't notice the tunnel, and won't help if the country shuts down the internet entirely. In some countries VPN use is restricted by law: check the local rules before your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does Max work in Europe? Yes, an account on a Russian number works in Europe over ordinary internet. You can't register a new account on a European number: EU countries aren't on the VK list.

Does Max work in Turkey and Egypt? In Turkey, yes, and Turkish numbers are on the registration list. Egyptian numbers aren't on the list, but an account on a Russian number works in Egypt over the internet. What else to keep in mind on your trip: VPN in Egypt.

Can I install Max with a foreign number? You can, if the number is from one of the 40 countries listed by VK on March 5, 2026. Such an account can message Russians only after mutually adding each other to contacts.

Does Max work in roaming? Yes. Roaming is more expensive than a local SIM, but the SIM with your number stays on the network and you can get the login code right away.

Do I need to turn off the VPN for Max? Not necessarily, but the app sees a VPN that's on on the phone. If you don't want Max to receive information about the tunnel, turn the VPN off while using it or at least exclude Max from the tunnel.
