Kinopoisk works abroad in only nine countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Uzbekistan. That's what Kinopoisk's help center says as of October 2026. In Turkey, Thailand, the UAE or Europe, subscription films won't start. The reason isn't Roskomnadzor but licenses: streaming services buy screening rights only for certain countries.
With a VPN it's become harder. Since mid-April 2026, Kinopoisk, Okko, Ivi, Wink and other services have been restricting access for users with a VPN on (RIA Novosti, 17.04.2026). Below we go through what each service officially allows abroad and what options remain.
Rights to films and series are sold by territory. If a service has a license only for Russia and neighboring countries, it has no right to show that film in Turkey, even if you paid for the subscription in Moscow.
Alexei Byrdin, head of the Internet Video association, explained to BFM on May 29, 2023 that rights to foreign content are usually sold by large regions, and Russian services buy them for their audience: Russia and the CIS countries. So the catalog depends not on where you took out the subscription, but on where you are right now. The service determines this by your IP address.
The official rules differ between services. We checked the help pages and user agreements of five streaming services.
| Service | Where it officially works | What's visible in other countries | Downloads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinopoisk | Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan | Subscription films unavailable. In Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan only the encyclopedia works | Downloads play only where there are rights; blocked in other countries |
| Okko | Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan | Okko original series are available in any country with a subscription | Not described in the help center |
| Ivi | The catalog depends on the country | Mostly Russian and Soviet films, a small share of foreign ones | For films where the rights holder allowed downloading |
| Start | "Available worldwide" | The catalog varies by country | Yes, on iOS and Android |
| Wink | Russia; Belarus and Armenia on separate terms | Under the agreement, the service doesn't guarantee operation in other countries | Not described in the help center |
Start has the most liberal policy: its help center says outright that the service is available worldwide, while the catalog varies according to agreements with rights holders. Wink has the strictest: in its user agreement of September 1, 2026 (clause 13.13), the viewer guarantees they're watching content from Russian territory.
No. Turkey isn't on Kinopoisk's list of countries, so subscription films and series won't play there, even if the subscription is paid.
Kinopoisk's help center states directly that the errors "We have minor glitches" or "Something broke on our end" are possible "if you are in another region". If you've moved to one of the nine countries and something won't start, support asks you to write which films didn't open and where you are.
Same reason: agreements with rights holders. But Okko and Ivi do have things you can watch outside their countries.
A tip for iPhone owners: Okko's help center warns that on iOS you shouldn't delete the app, because you won't be able to install it again. Abroad that's especially unpleasant.
Technically, a VPN with a server in Russia gives you a Russian IP address, and for the license check you're "in Russia" again. But since April 2026 that's often not enough: services check whether the connection goes through a VPN.
A separate question is the services' own rules. Wink's agreement prohibits actions aimed at circumventing technical protection measures and restrictions. Circumventing regional restrictions may violate a service's terms, and the consequences for your account are up to the service. More on how apps recognize a VPN: how apps detect a VPN.
There are three official options, each with its own limitations.
The subscription will keep being charged even if you can't watch it. If you're moving to a country not on the list, turn off auto-renewal before you leave. Those living in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan or another country on the list don't need to change anything: Kinopoisk officially works there. We collected the list of services that break for Russians abroad separately: Russian services don't open abroad.
BessyConnect runs on VLESS with Reality camouflage: to filters the traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS. There are more than 100 servers, no logs, registration isn't required, there's no device limit, and there's a trial period. In one app you can choose a Russian server for Russian sites and a foreign one for everything else, and with split tunneling route only the apps you need through the VPN.
For a TV, see the guide VPN on Android TV. BessyConnect isn't in the Russian App Store; for an iPhone you need an Apple ID from another country.
The honest limit. A VPN doesn't change licensing rules: Kinopoisk, Okko and Ivi decide for themselves whether to let in VPN connections, and since April 2026 many of them reject such connections. We don't promise that any particular streaming service will open, and we don't override the terms of user agreements. A VPN also won't help if the internet in the country is shut off, and won't solve paying for a subscription with a card the service doesn't accept.
Can I watch Kinopoisk abroad? Yes, if you're in one of nine countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan. In other countries subscription films won't start, and in Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan only the encyclopedia is available.
Does Okko work abroad? Okko films and series are available in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Okko original series can be watched from any country with a subscription.
Why doesn't Ivi work abroad? Ivi works abroad with a reduced catalog: mostly Russian and Soviet films. If error 4530 appears, the service has detected a VPN, proxy or Tor and restricted playback.
Will downloaded Kinopoisk films work abroad? Only in countries where Kinopoisk has the rights to that film. In others, downloads are blocked and will open again once you return.
Which Russian streaming service works abroad without restrictions? Start states in its help center that it's available worldwide, but the catalog depends on the country. No Russian service has a fully identical catalog abroad.
