VPN without a key: which apps work right away and how to tell them apart

A VPN without a key is an app that has its own servers: you install it, tap a button and connect, without pasting anything in. Happ, Incy and v2RayTun work differently: they are clients, and without someone else's key or subscription they are empty. The developers say so directly in the stores. The Incy listing in the App Store states "INCY does not provide servers", and the v2RayTun description on Google Play says: "You need to create or buy a server yourself and configure it" (both pages as of October 27, 2026). If you are tired of hunting for keys, you need a service with its own app, not yet another client.

We recommend BessyConnect: it has its own servers, no key is needed, and registration is optional.

How is a VPN without a key different from Happ, Incy and v2RayTun?

The difference is who owns the servers. A client like Happ or Incy can only connect to a server whose address you gave it as a vless://… key or a subscription link. A service with its own app runs the servers itself and has already added them to the list, so there is nothing to enter.

Clients are free, and that is the trap. A person sees a free app in the store, installs it and finds an empty screen. Then the hunt for a key begins: in Telegram channels, on forums, in collections of "working configs". Yandex suggestions confirm this: together with «впн без ключа» ("vpn without a key"), people search for «впн без ключа и конфигурации» ("vpn without a key and configuration"). A key and a configuration mean the same thing here: the details of someone else's server.

With a service it is the other way around. The app and the servers come from one company, and access is arranged inside the app: a free plan, a trial period or a subscription. What exactly is inside a key, and where people who do need one get it, is covered in the article a VPN key: the vless:// format and where to paste it.

How do you tell whether an app needs a key?

Open the description in the App Store or Google Play and look for phrases like "does not provide servers", "does not provide a VPN service", "use your own servers", "import configurations". If they are there, you are looking at a client, and it won't work without a key. If the description lists the service's countries and servers and says nothing about importing, no key is needed.

Here is how it looks for the three most popular clients as of October 27, 2026:

AppWhat the store listing says
Incy (App Store)"INCY does not provide servers and does not impose infrastructure"
v2RayTun (Google Play)"This app does not provide a VPN service for sale. You need to create or buy a server yourself and configure it"
Happ (Google Play)"Happ does not provide paid VPN services. Users are responsible for purchasing or setting up their own servers"

There are indirect signs too. A client calls itself a "proxy utility" or a "client" (in the App Store, Happ is named Happ - Proxy Utility), lists the protocols VLESS, VMess and Trojan, and can scan a QR code with a configuration. A service talks about its locations, plans and a connect button. More on where Happ gets its servers is in the Happ review, and about keys for the second client in the article a key for Incy.

Which VPNs work without a key?

Three types of apps work without a key: paid services with their own servers, services with an ad-free free plan, and free apps that make money on ads. They differ in who pays for the servers and what data goes to third parties along the way.

TypeKey needed?Where the server comes fromRisks
Client (Happ, Incy, v2RayTun)YesFrom whoever gave you the key: a service, a friend, a public giveawayA public key is shared by many users, the server owner is unknown, the key can be deleted at any moment
Service with its own app and subscription (BessyConnect)NoThe service's servers are already in the appYou have to trust one company; BessyConnect is not in the Russian App Store
Service with an ad-free free plan (Proton VPN)NoThe service's servers, fewer of them on the free planFewer locations; the app is not in the Russian App Store
Free app with ads (Planet VPN, VPN - Super Unlimited Proxy)NoThe service's serversAds, data collection for advertising, sometimes cross-app tracking
A cracked build or an APK from a chatSometimesUnknownA tampered app, malicious code, data theft

Two neutral examples from our reviews. Planet VPN, according to its App Store description, offers 6 free locations in 5 countries and doesn't require registration. At the same time, its list of premium features includes "no ads in the app", and the listing itself is marked as containing ads. Its limitations are covered in detail in the Planet VPN review. Proton VPN has a free plan with no traffic limit and, according to the developer, no ads. In this respect it is stronger than most free services.

Is there a free VPN without a key?

There is, but "free" is always paid for with something: ads, a cut-down list of countries or user data. Before installing a free VPN without a key, look at the "App Privacy" section in the App Store. The line "Data Used to Track You" means data may be linked to you across other companies' apps and websites.

An example as of October 27, 2026: the app VPN - Super Unlimited Proxy (seller Mobile Jump Pte Ltd) lists "Usage Data" in this section. In the section on data not linked to you, there is the purpose "Third-Party Advertising". The listing is marked as containing ads. Proton VPN and Planet VPN have no tracking section.

Apple's rules for VPNs are strict. Section 5.4 of the App Store Review Guidelines says that VPN apps may not sell, use or disclose user data to third parties for any purpose, and must commit to this in their privacy policy. The label in the listing is filled in by the developer, so read it before installing, not after.

On Android, check the same thing in the "Data safety" section of the Google Play listing. How a free VPN differs from a paid one in speed and stability is covered in the comparison free or paid VPN. Unofficial "premium" builds are not worth installing: what you get is not a VPN without a key but an app without an author, to which you hand all your traffic.

How to download a VPN without a key on an iPhone in Russia?

On the iPhone, the main obstacle is not the key but the storefront. As of October 27, 2026, a search of the Russian App Store finds neither BessyConnect, nor Proton VPN, nor Planet VPN, nor the Happ and Incy clients. To install them, you need an Apple ID from another country.

You can change the country on the iPhone itself. Following Apple's instructions (the article "Change your Apple Account country or region", September 21, 2026):

  1. Spend any remaining balance on your Apple Account.
  2. Cancel subscriptions that block the country change and wait until the paid period ends.
  3. If you are in a Family Sharing group, the change may be unavailable until you leave it.
  4. Open Settings, tap your name, then Media & Purchases.
  5. Tap Country/Region, choose the new country and tap Continue, then Agree.
  6. Enter a payment method and billing address for the new country and tap Done.

Apple warns that you may need a valid payment method for the new country. If you don't have one, the second option from the same instructions is to wait until you are physically in another country and create a new Apple Account. After the change, you will have to download your apps again, and some content may be unavailable in the new country.

Once the app is installed, there is no key to look for: open it, allow it to add a VPN configuration and connect. What this looks like step by step is shown in the guide how to set up a VPN on iPhone.

When is a key more convenient than a ready-made service?

If you have your own server or a trusted key provider, a client like Happ or Incy remains a good choice. It supports several protocols, lets you keep servers from different providers in one list, and works on platforms for which the service hasn't released an app.

A ready-made service has its own limitations. You depend on one company: if its servers are overloaded, you can't switch to someone else's within the same app. The list of platforms is set by the service. And no VPN, with or without a key, will help if mobile internet is shut off completely: the tunnel simply has nothing to run through.

Why we recommend BessyConnect

To those looking for a VPN without a key, we recommend BessyConnect. It is a service with its own app and its own servers: no key is needed, you install the app and connect.

  • No key needed. There is no string that will get deleted and no giveaway that will end tomorrow.
  • Its own servers. There are more than 100 of them, and all belong to one service that is responsible for them and for the app.
  • Traffic camouflage. The VLESS protocol with Reality: to an outside observer, the traffic looks like ordinary HTTPS.
  • No logs. Connection logs are not kept.
  • You can try it without an account. Registration is optional, and there is a trial period.

There are apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Android and Android TV:

Where BessyConnect won't help. There is no Windows app: on a Windows computer you will need a different service or a client with a key. The app is not in the Russian App Store either; installing it on an iPhone requires an Apple ID from another country. The Happ and Incy clients support more protocols, and if you already have your own server, a separate service isn't necessary. When mobile internet is shut off completely, neither BessyConnect nor any other VPN will connect.

If you are looking for a VPN that works without a key and without setup, start with BessyConnect: all versions of the app are gathered on the download page.
